New Delhi: May 23, 2017
To Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Mr Saulius Skvernelis
I write to you with great happiness at the successful celebration of the International Day of Yoga on June 21 over the last two years that has spread a new global awareness about the contribution of yoga to human health and well-being.
I also wish to express my gratitude for your encouragement to this cause, especially you Government‘s invaluable support to the UNGA Resolution in December 2014, which was passed unanimously and co-sponsored by 177 nations, designating June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.
Over the last two years, people from all over the world, including from your country, have enthusiastically joined in celebrating the International Day of Yoga at iconic global venues. Their commitment has consolidated the Association of humanity with this precious ancient heritage of India.
As you would know, Excellency, yoga is not merely a system of physical exercise, but a holistic approach to complete well-being. Its inherent philosophy and practise stand for achieving peace, internal and external harmony and happiness. By taking yoga to people across social strata and in different age groups, we can contribute to the development of physical and mental health for stronger nations and communities.
The observance of International Day of Yoga seeks to reinforce this message for every individual, and join them the collective pursuit of these aspirations.
We plan to make this year’s International Yoga Day more extensive, more vibrant and bigger, on a much larger scale than its previous two edition. In this endeavour, as we approach the third International Day of Yoga on June 21, 2017, I solicit your support to mobilise participation of the people of your country in even larger numbers to celebrate this Day.
I am confident that with the support of your Government and the commitment of your friendly people, we will reach new landmarks in this journey for peace and progress through yoga.
Please accept, Excellency, the assurance of my highest consideration.
Prime Minister of India
Narendra Modi
